Dental Care Tips

HOT AND COLD DON'T MIX
Hot and cold don’t mix. Give your teeth a few seconds to cool off from a gulp of steaming beverage before you dive into a spoonful of ice cream or yogurt. Quick temperature shifts cause existing cracks to expand or contract.

TOOTHBRUSHING  Gentler is better. Forget about hard scrubbing/brushing at it might do more harm than good. To avoid gum abrasions / receding gums, do short strokes at gentle pressure. Don’t squash the bristles. The tips will do the cleaning.

Never brush in one spot too long. Spend a maximum of 10 seconds per area as concentrating too much in one area may damage the tooth enamel.

Take aim at plaque. The most critical place for plaque is the gum area. When this bacteria laden film slips through the gum line, it can do real damage to your teeth and gums.

Hold your toothbrush horizontally. Then rotate it such that the brush ends point upward toward the gum line of your upper teeth, downward for your lower teeth. Then brush at circular strokes, working the bristles into crevices between the teeth and gums.

Don’t get attached to your toothbrush. Toothbrushes must be replaced every 3 to 4 months for efficient bushing and to avoid bacterial build-up.

FLOSSING
Proper flossing removes plaque and food particles in places where a toothbrush cannot easily reach — under the gumline and between your teeth. Because plaque build-up can lead to tooth decay and gum disease, daily flossing is highly recommended. To receive maximum benefits from flossing, use the following proper technique:

  1. Starting with about 18 inches of floss, wind most of the floss around each middle finger, leaving an inch or two of floss to work with
  2. Gently curve the floss around the base of each tooth, making sure you go beneath the gumline. Never snap or force the floss, as this may cut or bruise delicate gum tissue
  3. Use clean sections of floss as you move from tooth to tooth
  4. To remove the floss, use the same back-and-forth motion to bring the floss up and away from the teeth
